Sony geeft ontwikkeling PS Phone toe
Vorige week doken er afbeeldingen op van een prototype van een mengeling tussen een telefoon en een gamesplatform, liefkozend de PS Phone gedoopt. Sony gaf vervolgens aan dat de afbeeldingen nep waren en dat ze geen gametelefoon in ontwikkeling hadden om dat vlak daarna weer in te trekken met de melding dat ze niet in gaan op speculatie en hier geen uitspraken over doen.
Ondertussen zijn we een aantal dagen verder en is ook Sony weer van mening veranderd. Het bedrijf geeft toe dat er een "nieuw product" in ontwikkeling is dat gerelateerd is aan Sony Ericsson en Sony Computer Entertainment én de mobiele telefonie gamesmarkt. Het bedrijf wacht nog op een geschikt moment om het product te presenteren.
"We are trying to figure out what we can do as Sony in this [cellphone] market," verklaarde Sony managers. "[SCE] moved from Aoyama, the design and headquarters had to come to Sony City. They are closer to the planning and engineering group of Sony, and I think we can better incorporate all of these capabilities. When the timing is right we can probably announce the new product that we have."
Sony hoopt met het nieuwe apparaat een bredere markt aan te spreken. De PSP was meer op core-gamers gericht, en met de PS Phone hopen ze ook de 'light'-gamer te bereiken die gamet op de mobiele telefoon en andere apparaten voor onderweg. Naast de PS Phone werkt Sony wellicht ook aan een tablet. Voordat er echter nieuwe hardware van Sony zal verschijnen wil het bedrijf eerst een duidelijke eigen stempel op het product drukken.
"Mobile gaming is a very important business area for us," aldus Masaru Kato, de financiële baas van Sony. "We started out with the PSP that was our first mobile gaming console, but since then the market as you know has expanded into bigger arenas; gaming on mobile phones, gaming on tablets and on certain mobiles devices.
"The PSP being a proprietary platform was more concentrated I'd say on the core gaming segment than the light game, but now we are addressing that market as well. I can not be specific as to how we will introduce new product to address these markets, but one thing I can say is that we have those markets addressed and we will come out with products and services to capture the broader gaming market."
"It is true Apple has led the market, but when we are to enter the market we would like to put a Sony character onto a new product - and that is the effort we are making right now. Therefore I think you can hope for a very good product to come out."
