EA en Ubisoft loven prijsverlaging PlayStation 3

Deze week heeft Sony dan eindelijk de prijs van de PlayStation 3 flink laten zakken, naar €299,- in afwachting van de PS3 Slim, die in september gelanceerd wordt. Niet alleen gamers, ook uitgevers vroegen hier al langer om en giganten Electronic Arts en Ubisoft waren dan ook erg te spreken over deze manoeuvre van Sony.

"It's exceptional news, actually. I think the machine is a great machine, with the Blu-ray,” aldus Guillemot van Ubisoft, in gesprek met GamesIndustry.biz. "I'm happy that they were able to move to that [price point], particularly in the UK."

Ook Frank Gibeau, president van Electronic Arts, stak zijn bewondering niet onder stoelen of banken:

"I think it's awesome. It's an old line, but it still rings true for us: 'We make the ammunition for the hardware wars'. So the lowest priced hardware possible is a good thing for us. We want to see as big and broad a base as possible, and the Sony hardware is a good piece of equipment."

Beide topmanagers denken dat door deze prijsverlaging er veel consumenten een PS3 zullen gaan aanschaffen, wat betekent dat de markt voor hun producten groeit. Daarnaast denkt Gibeau dat door de lagere prijzen, de huidige generatie nog wel een paar jaartjes vooruit kan. Dat is ook goed voor ontwikkelaars en uitgevers, die dan niet al snel weer moeten gaan investeren in nieuwe technologieën.

"The good news is that we still have a lot of price points to go yet - Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony - which points to a longer cycle for hardware this time around. And again, for us it's great, because we don't have to go out and build a whole new set of engines for next-gen,"
