Bill Gates over de Xbox 360 en HD DVD

Bill Gates heeft weer eens zijn vertrouwen uitgesproken in de xbox 360 en het succes van HD DVD techniek. Terwijl hij op bezoek was in Japan, zei Gates dat hij hoopte dat de X360 een heel legioen oudere gamers voor zich zou winnen met zijn simpele games en online multiplayer systeem.

'The Xbox came out for the last Christmas season. That's been a very sold-out product and really ushering in this idea of high-definition gaming -- realism -- but even more importantly, the idea of community.

'Bringing that social community aspect into this we think is very critical and it will redefine and revolutionize those products, in fact make it attractive not just to young men but to people of all ages,'

De Xbox, die gelanceerd werd in november 2001, en pas naar Japan kwam in februari 2002, werd daar een flop. Dit kwam deels door het gebrek aan games die interessant zouden zijn voor Japanners. Deze keer doet Microsoft er alles aan om zijn fouten niet te herhalen, mede door de console dit keer flink wat eerder te lanceren dan Sony.

Naast het console gevecht, leveren Microsoft en Sony nog op een ander gebied strijd. Het gaat dan om de volgende generatie DVD spelers. Microsoft steunt het HD DVD formaat van Toshiba en NEC, wat concurreert met het Blu-Ray systeem van Panasonic en Sony.

Toch kan Microsoft in dat gebied prima concessies doen, Windows Vista kan namelijk met enige kleine aanpassingen klaargemaakt worden voor Blu-Ray, mits er genoeg informatie over dat systeem geleverd wordt.
