Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 is de hoogste nieuwkomer en tevens de best verkochte game in de wekelijkse Japanse verkooplijsten. Daarmee staat het boven een andere opvallende nieuwkomer, Super Mario 3D World.

Beide games verkochten echter (aanzienlijk) minder dan eerdere delen in de franchise. Zie de vergelijkingen hieronder, gemaakt door NeoGAF-gebruikers. Lightning Returns komt pas in februari uit in Europa.
