Xbox Live Gold staat BBC iPlayer in de weg

De Britse publieke omroep, de BBC, heeft net als de Nederlandse publieke omroep een website met daarop gratis alle programma's van de BBC, zodat je die later lekker op je dooie gemakkie na kunt kijken. De BBC is echter nog wat ambitieuzer dan de Nederlandse publieke omroep op dit gebied want het is de doelstelling van de BBC om de content op zoveel mogelijk populaire mediaspelers als mogelijk. Het is de BBC dan ook al gelukt om hun iPlayer, waarmee de online programma's te bekijken zijn, op de PlayStation 3 en Wii te krijgen, maar helaas is dat vooralsnog niet het geval met de Xbox 360. Microsoft staat namelijk de uitrol van het programma in de weg.

Microsoft wil namelijk wel graag de iPlayer op de Xbox 360 hebben, maar wel slechts voor Xbox Live Gold-abonnees. Dit kan de BBC echter niet doen, omdat iedere inwoner van Groot Brittannië al betaalt voor het bestaan van de BBC en er niet nog eens extra betaald mag worden voor toegang tot de programma's.

Microsoft only wants to offer its users access to platforms it can charge for as this is the model it is pursuing. It wants to ensure that only those paying for Xbox Live Gold accounts can access its additional content services and even then there is usually a charge on top to get access to those. For example, to access the Sky Player on Xbox, you have to pay for a Gold subscription as well as a Sky subscription.

This does not fit with the BBC’s model and Microsoft will not budge at the moment. It is really frustrating for those involved on the BBC side who want to make sure iPlayer is rolled out on as many popular entertainment platforms as possible.
