Weglaten backwards compatibility simpele optelsom

Newsweek hield een interview met de Jack Tretton, de CEO van Sony America. Sony heeft ook voor de VS een prijsverlaging aangekondigd en hield naar aanleiding daarvan dit interview. Volgens Tretton is het weglaten van backwards compatibility gewoon een simpele optelsom.

Ten tijde van de launch kon een consument voor 599 dollar een PS3 kopen met backwards compatibility. Nu kan de consument voor 399 dollar een PS3 kopen zonder backwards compatibility, en voor 129 dollar een PlayStation 2. Hierdoor is de consument uiteindelijk goedkoper uit en heeft zelf de keuze of hij of zij ook PlayStation 2 spellen wil kunnen spelen.

"I guess the way I tend to look at it, is if I'm a consumer, and I paid $599 for the Playstation 3 when it launched, I got backwards compatibility and I got Playstation 3 technology. Today, for $399, I'm able to get all the same technology in the Playstation 3, and for $129, if I don't own a PlayStation 2, I can buy that as well at any retailer in North America. So for a total investment of $529, I've got two machines that do everything the same machine did a year ago at $599. So it's hard for me to see that as a negative for the consumer.

Wat er precies met het nieuwe 80GB model zal gaan gebeuren wil Tretton niets over los laten. De console zal de komende tijd gewoon nog in de winkels verkrijgbaar zijn.
