Amerikaanse wetenschappers willen de wolharige mammoet tot leven wekken. Zij zamelden maar liefst 15 miljoen dollar (12,7 miljoen euro) in voor het ambitieuze project, dat het voortbestaan van de Aziatische olifant moet garanderen. Lees meer bij het AD.
De techondernemer Ben Lamm en geneticaprofessor George Church, zijn samen de inatiefnemers van dit project waarvoor ze samen het bedrijf Colossal hebben opgericht. Men wil het dna van de mammoet kruisen met dat van een Aziatische olifant. Hiervoor gebruiken zij de huidcellen van de al uitstervende Aziatische olifant. Deze cellen worden 'hergeprogrammeerd' tot stamcellen met mammoet-dna.
If all goes to plan, co-founder Ben Lamm said that he is “confident” Colossal will produce its first set of elephant-mammoth hybrid calves in four to six years.
